In a bid to make PTI a real force to function on the lines of Western democracies, new entrant in the PTI, Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar, will be assigned the task of preparing a shadow cabinet in the party.
Sarwar, a former British MP and Punjab governor, made this revelation in an exclusive chat with The Nation on Wednesday, a day after joining the PTI.
Sharing his ideas of making PTI a political force with a marvellous art of governance when voted to power, Sarwar said, “I will employ all my efforts to prepare a shadow cabinet in the party in an effort to build a team which not only identifies the shortcomings of the sitting cabinet departments but also becomes a group of skilled politicians who would know what to do in the departments they get on coming to power.”
“I will seek guidance from my experiences as a former British MP to do the job as well as the lessons I learnt being the former Punjab governor on how to correct the inefficient governance system in my motherland. I will make every bid to make sure that PTI-led government does not depend on the bureaucracy for the matters of policy-making.”
Sarwar said: “It is unfortunate that the cabinet members who suppose to give the guidelines to the bureaucracy concerning their departments are guided by them as they (ministers) have no study about their departments.”
He said, “Preparing youth for the business of running a government and running the party affairs will be my top priority.” The new PTI leader remarked: “It is my strong wish that I can do something for making Pakistan a state in which no one is above the law.
Commenting upon his office in the party, Sarwar remarked: “Though my colleagues desire to give me a party position, but I don’t want to violate the democratic norms, being a politician who believes in democracy. I will get the party office through the party polls”.
When asked if he would wait till the PTI party polls to be held in 2017, he replied: “There is no harm in it. I am in no hurry. How can I present myself as an example to the youth whom I want to prepare as front-runners?”
The PTI core committee has empowered the party chairman to make nominations against certain vacant offices and Khan has made an important nomination of Jahangir Tareen as the party secretary general after the elevation of Pervez Khattak as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister. However, Sarwar insisted that he would get the party position only by following the due process.
The new entrant in PTI said the party chairman had included him in the top policy-making committee which has the task of having new faces in the party and supervising the tickets, besides taking other policy decisions. “I can do my job from the platform of this committee at this stage,” he averred.
Sarwar concluded in a lighter tone: “I held an important position before joining the PTI, but could not make a difference, so it is not necessary that one can do something only through a position whether political or public office.”
