Pakistan is in the grip of deep-seated tentacles of corruption, both monetary and non-monetary, which must be cracked down upon. Corrupt practices go unchecked within our administrative structures. This double-edged sword that is widening the rich-poor gap as well as enhancing extremism among the youth should be condemned vociferously and acted against.Recent raids and inquiries by NAB, the FIA and the Rangers were, indeed, the need of the hour and must be appreciated.The list of cases against high-profile figures include the prime minister, the Punjab chief minister, former premiers , ministers and top bureaucrats. Cases of monetary irregularities, land scams, abuse of power and embezzlement amounting to billions of rupees have been reported. Not a single prosecution or accountability of high-profile figures has taken place. NAB has grossly failed in its task of eliminating corruption. They say ‘fish rots from head’. Unless high-profile figures are prosecuted on fast track, society will never see social justice. The arrest of KP minister Ziaullah Afridi on corruption charges seems a new beginning and deserves appreciation. The following steps will stem the rot: Plea bargain option to the accused should be stopped forthwith; all benefits, perks and privileges from treasury to the accused should be stopped till he or she is acquitted by the court; cases should be heard on fast track and decided by courts within six months. Bank loans waived off in the past must be recovered immediately. Bank loan defaulters should be prosecuted.NAB should submit progress of pending cases every month to the Supreme Court. The cases should also be displayed on its website stating investigation starting date.
