India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on visit to Canada has clinched another nuclear deal with the country apart from several other MoUs. Apart from on arrival visa to Indian’s, Canada has also agreed to provide Uranium to India for next five years. Both the countries unveiled C$350 million ($280 million) deal to supply uranium fuel to India, formally ending a lengthy dispute that began after New Delhi used Canadian technology to develop a nuclear bomb. However ndia’s actions provided the impetus for the establishment of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the body meant to control nuclear trade and ensure that materials that could be used for making a nuclear weapons program are not traded.Yet today India secured a nuclear deal with Canada and has firm assurance from several countries that it can become a member of the NSG, the first country to do so without having signed the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
This deal would open a new chapter of nuclear race in South Asia as Pakistan would also increase its capacity to produce or purchase Uranium from other countries. Earlier India has also signed such deal with US whichis clear violatino of NPT. If the NPT has ceased to hold weight for India than it must be relaxed for Pakistan too.The duplicity is not only defeating the legitimacy of global non-proliferation efforts but is also adding to Pakistan’s sense of injustice. This could betray Pakistan from US and it may rethink to move in Russsia’s block as Russia has also shown keenness to develop ties with Pakistan.
