The growing popularity of President Muhammadu Buhari is indeed a mania within and outside the shores of Nigeria. His popularity is a function of his impeccable antecedents of service and probity. He rose from a set of leaders with unstained records of discipline and financial probity. Undoubtedly, President Buhari is expected to wave a ‘magic wand’ to correct systemic corruption, administrative impunity and bouts of terror attacks, especially in the northeastern part of Nigeria. There are, however, internal and external factors that must be tactfully managed before steering his administration’s ship to safety.While no country should be seen locking itself up in political, economic and social isolation, global lessons must serve as boundaries to the extent forces can be introduced into Nigeria’s anti-terror war. During the Nigeria/Biafran civil war, the US declared its neutrality, stating, “America is not in a position to take action as Nigeria is an area under British influence.”
Nigerians, especially those in power, must realize that the country’s problem is internal and only an internal solution can properly address it. While it is not wrong for Buhari to seek foreign assistance, the terms of such assistance, the extent and the related interests is very important to decipher.
