Opposition leader Khurshid Shah on Monday said that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) should refrain from interfering in affairs of the Sindh government.While addressing a press conference on the second day of Eid, he held dictatorship responsible for the rise in corruption in the country and termed it cancerous.While talking about the Karachi operation, Shah underlined that it was Altaf Hussain who asked the army to start operation but he himself got trapped in it. It is, however, understandable that the Leader of the Opposition has essentially the 18th amendment in his mind and he considers involvement of FIA and NAB in Sindh as interference in the Provincial autonomy. But, it sees, Shah is overstretching the 18th amendment too much and using its umbrella to protect rampant and proverbial corruption in his native Province. In the first place, we would remind Khurshid Shah that FIA and NAB have certain roles assigned to them by the law and he himself had been part of this legislative process for a long time. The two institutions can definitely operate anywhere while remaining strictly within their legal mandate and there can’t be any exceptions to shield vested interests. Otherwise, there is no logic to keep these two institutions if their mandate is confined to mere a few hundred kilometres of Islamabad Capital Territory. Khurshid Shah is believed to be a saner voice within the PPP and otherwise too he has a towering personality, which has further been exalted by virtue of the office he holds. It is, therefore, beyond imagination that a person of his stature and background would churn out such a worthless statement just for political point-scoring. We would urge him that instead of making useless attempts to protect corruption, the PPP should demonstrate zero tolerance towards corruption and support the campaign to expose and bring the corrupt to justice. This would earn good name to PPP as good governance in the Province would be to its advantage. We hope that Syed Khurshid Shah would revisit his approach and lend a helping hand to the system in cleaning the mess.
