In Nigeria Boko Haram Islamists have killed many people. On July 23, 2015, they blasted two buses, wounding several passengers and eradicating innocent lives. These Boko Haram Islamists have killed more than 17,000 people in Nigeria to date. The government is not taking appropriate measures to combat this heinous terrorism. It is also reported that this Islamist group has shot women, destroyed homes and is targeting mosques. According to a report on July 4, 2015, it killed 200 people within a short span of 48 hours. The problem, since Buhari s appointment, has gravitated from being Nigeria s domestic issue into a full-blown security problem for neighbouring states like Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin. Clearly, the lack of an all-encompassing plan to counter this menace is becoming evident. Defeating Boko Haram will not just be a military exercise. Buhari must go about creating a stable, self-sufficient society, in which the youth see assistance and support from the government in terms of providing education, welfare, employment, stimulus in trade and commerce as an added alternative to just security. Buhari has explored the option of negotiating with Boko Haram. Till now, however, he has been in the dark with regard to who exactly he should negotiate with. This indicates a lack of adequate intelligence which, in turn, puts the spotlight on the military s stumbling progress. Despite the overwhelming mandate received from Nigerians, Buhari is battling a crisis on multiple fronts. Nigeria s importance in the continent across multiple spectrums cannot be emphasised enough. The Boko Haram menace feeds into corruption, insecurity and political instability, which has restricted foreign investment so far in Nigeria. Buhari s checklist of tribulations is full. He must reassert his authority immediately.
