A high level consultation between the federation and Punjab was held today regarding the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)’s anti-government rallies and processions. Reportedly, ministers have suggested not arresting Maryam Nawaz and giving free-hand to the opposition in its protests.

According to details, the meeting was held between Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar and Federal Ministers. Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry, Shafqat Mehmood and Interior Advisor Shahzad Akbar attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed the issue of allowing PDM’s planned protests and rallies. While some leaders advised against showing resistance to the opposition’s protest, others suggested that it should be avoided in view of coronavirus concerns.

According to sources, it was agreed in the meeting that no undemocratic step would be taken against the opposition. The ministers also suggested against arresting Maryam Nawaz during the protests, saying that the opposition should be exposed by propagating the government’s narrative instead.

During the meeting, participants expressed concern over the rising cases of coronavirus, urging all political parties to avoid large gatherings to not help spread the virus
