Government has been in a sheer disarray after opposition has gestured to tender resignation because it could result in the fresh elections which is vehemently denied by the party. In this worst case scenario PTI has said that it would seek by polls however opposition has said it is the prerogative of election commission not the Prime Minister. PML-N General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal says that in case of resignations by the opposition members, a new poll would be held to elect the prime minister afresh, implying that the resignations would lead to the general election and not by-polls.
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Friday said that the opposition will never resign from assemblies and if it happens then only 18 to 20 members from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will resign from their seats. However it could be just a speculation and there can be no fact. If entire PML-N and other opposition parties really place their resignations on table, Government would be in dire woods.
According to the sources, the option of resigning from parliament to mount pressure on the government was included in the declaration on the demand of Maulana Fazlur Rehman. They said the Maulana was of the view that they should immediately resign from parliament, but the PPP and PML-N opposed the idea.
Some of the leaders, including Mr Bhutto-Zardari, were of the view that Nawaz Sharif should return to the country and the opposition lawmakers should hand over their resignations to him. Mr Sharif suggested in lighter vein that they should hand over their resignations to Maulana Fazl. However, no final decision could be made and it was decided to include the option in the declaration.
This is the very reason that PTI is used all the tactics to reign in opposition. Putting Shahbaz behind bars, indicting Zardari, arresting close aide to Maualan Fazal ur Rehan and filing a treason case against Nawaz Sharif show that Government is under sheer stress and under the duress stress it is shooting itself in the foot. Though Fawad Chaudhry and Fayyaz ul Hassan Chauhan are undermining the potential of opposition to do so yet it may be just political statements.
At this stage the number games matters, Pakistan Tehreek.e. Insaf has 149 seats in the parliament, Pakistan Muslim league has 84, People party enjoys 54 members and Similarly Mengal group has 4 seats. The total number of opposition seats fall at 142 seats which is more than on third in case if all other parties including PML-Q and JUI continue to support PTI however if they defect it will certainly cause a problem for PTI and even if they don’t defect it can create serious problems for the Government.
However, the time will tell that how many law makers from the opposition camps are ready to tender resignation. If opposition takes a strong stance on the resignations country may witness midterm elections and it means end of the PTI term. However, military establishment and political powers will try to avoid this extreme situation either by mounting pressure on opposition or seeking reconciliation with opposition.
