In a bid to placate the anger over Pakistan biggest child pornography case, the Punjab Inspector General Police visited Kasur on Tuesday, announcing the suspension of the area’s DPO and an SHO. But it was not enough to spare him the wrath of parents and protesters with a shoe being thrown at the officer as he left after press conference. IGP Mushtaq Sukhera visited Hussain Khan Wala village to take stock of the situation. Though there is general deterioration in the overall society in the country but the case of police is quite different and significant as it is supposed to check crime and corruption. As for Kasur, the unholy activity was going on for seven years under the very nose of Police and district administration while it is generally believed that crime in Karachi is taking place in full connivance with police. But the issue of inefficiency, corruption and negligence of police is not confined to Kasur or Karachi alone as situation is almost similar in other parts of the country. There is somewhat improvement in the working of KPK Police and credit for this, no doubt, goes to the PTI Government, which gave a free hand to Provincial chief of the force Nasir Durrani, who has worked hard to bring about reforms and improvement in the police. This shows that given the will and resolve as well as appointment of right kind of heads can make a real difference. However, it is pitiable that despite numerous attempts made in the past to reform the police force, the force is today considered as bad a symbol of coercion, corruption and fear as it was anytime in the past. There have been numerous complaints from all parts of the country that local police is hands in glove in crimes. Police is in full knowledge of each and every activity taking place in the areas of their jurisdiction but it remains passive just because it is beneficiary of illegal activities and crimes. Such a situation cannot be allowed to continue for an indefinite period especially when people are so fed up from police and judicial system that they are now resorting to mob justice. Therefore, the Federal and Provincial Governments should sit together to review the situation and taken concrete measures to reform the police force in a genuine manner.
