The Hyderabad range police have asked unregistered madrassas to get registered to avoid punishment under the law.
The violators will be put under the fourth schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act, under which terrorism suspects are kept under observation. Hyderabad DIG Sanaullah Abbasi made this announcement at a meeting on Wednesday.
“The heads of madrassas who don’t comply should be produced before the magistrate who can order up to 90 days of imprisonment,” Dr Abbasi told The Express Tribune. “If the violation continues even after the punishment, that madrassa will be sealed.”
There are around 234 unregistered madrassas in the nine districts of Hyderabad police range with an estimate 11,727 students. Meanwhile, there are 370 registered madrassas in the range with around 5,596 students.
The DIG asked the SSPs to collect details of the faculty and students as well as their source of funding of the registered madrassas.
