Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Tuesday has reiterated that Pakistan stands unequivocally with the Kashmiri people in their struggle for freedom from the tyranny of one of the most ruthless, inhumane and illegal occupation in modern history.

In a series of posts on social-networking website Twitter, the PM said, “On 5th January 1949, the United Nations guaranteed the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir through an impartial plebiscite.”

“We observe this day as a reminder to the UN and its member states of their unfulfilled commitment to the Kashmiri people,” he added.

The premier said, “Despite suffering 73 years of brutal Indian occupation, Kashmiri people remain steadfast in the demand for their inalienable right to self determination as guaranteed to them under the UN Charter and by the UNSC.”

“We call on the international community to take action against the well-documented human rights violations being committed with impunity by Indian occupation forces against innocent Kashmiri men, women and children to ensure Kashmiris get their right to self determination,” he went on to say.

It is to be mentioned here that Kashmiri people inhibiting across both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and rest of the world are observing the Right to Self-Determination Day today to remind the international community of the UN Security Council resolution on Jammu and Kashmir adopted on January 5, 1949, acknowledging their inherent right to self-determination.

The day is being observed every year by Jammu and Kashmir people to invite the attention of international community and the United Nations towards the early grant of right to self determination to Kashmir through implementation of the historic resolutions on Kashmir passed this day in 1949 by the Security Council of the UNO.
