Vicious sectarian and ethnic violence in Myanmar has forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas Muslims to leave their homes and take refuge in neighbouring countries particularly in Thailand.
What is worrisome is that the international community appears to be least bothered about their miserable living conditions. Reports from Mae La refugee camp in Thailand suggest that aid groups are beginning to prepare for the eventual return of one of the world’s largest refugee population but what concern the Rohingyas, is their security as many fear that the deadly anti-Muslim riots were no accident but the product of an effort led by army hard-liners to throw them out of the country. Last year, clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in western Myanmar killed at least 580 people and displaced more than 120,000, mostly Rohingya while last month’s violence killed dozens and left more than 13,000 homeless. The Rohingya numbering around 800,000, primarily in western Burma. Lived in the country for generations yet they are not included on the list of 135 official ethnic groups. After two years of genocide finally South East Asian lawmakers on Wednesday urged their leaders to discuss Myanmar’s Rohingya crisis at their upcoming summit in Malaysia, saying it has led to the highest outflow of asylum seekers by sea in the region since the Vietnam War. The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights said in a statement that the 10-member Association must abandon its policy of not interfering in each other’s affairs, which has been used as a justification to avoid holding a discussion on the Rohingya issue. It is good news for the abandoned Rohingyas and hopefully it will bring a quantum of respite for the poor Rohingyas.
