According to news the federal capital schools and colleges will observe Saturday as day-off. The two weekly off days were discontinued in November 2013 to complete the courses in the schools and colleges on time and produce good results. Where this decision is hailed by the parents and teachers, at the same time it has given rise to many questions.
The education system of Pakistan is rotten to the core. The literacy rate in Pakistan is recorded as about 57% in 2013-2014. At present, the education sector is facing crisis just like other major sectors of the country. In Human Development Report Pakistan is placed at 136th position for having just 49.9% educated population. In addition to that, Pakistan is ranked at 113th out of 120 registered UN members according to the research conducted by UNESCO et al. Some of the very basic flaws of the education system in Pakistan contribute to the economic, ethnic and sociopolitical crisis within the country. Thus the decision came as a surprise because the younger generation needs to put in their utmost energies for acquiring education to take Pakistan forward at a time when the country is on road to recovery and there is a realization that we have lost much time and only those nations can attain progress that excel in education. Schools are institutions that lay the foundation of a child’s development and where the young talent is recognized and nurtured thus laying the foundation of a stronger nation. In this situation, allowing two weekly offs in government runeducational institutions is nothing but a luxury. While two weekly off days are being observed in government offices to save electricity but we believe that the CADD and Federal Directorate of Education should reconsider the decision and not rely on the feedback of the principals, many of whom are no doubt top educationists but a vast majority of teachers are in favour of two holidays rather than showing inclination towards more teaching hours to promote quality education in the country. Education is very important for the development of every country. It is the only cure for the disability of a country because today’s students are tomorrow’s nation builder. Government of Pakistan should take steps to remove the above mentioned problems so as to improve the quality of educational system of the country.
