The government on Friday formed a five-member ‘grievances redressal committee’ to allay Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) uncertainties and fears on the targeted operation in Karachi being carried out by Rangers and police, paving the way for the disgruntled MNAs of the party to return to the assemblies.The decision came a week after the government and MQM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Federal Minister Ishaq Dar with MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar made the announcement at a news conference in Islamabad last week.A notification has been issued today in this regard saying the committee, tasked to complete its work on the complaints within 90 days, will hold its first session within next 15 days. The committee comprises of Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid, Justice (retd) Khalil-ur-Rehman Khan, Justice (retd) Ajmal Mian, Barrister Farogh Nasim and the Interior Secretary. The GRC will register and resolve concerns raised by the MQM related to the Rangers-led security operation in Karachi within 90 days after receiving the complaints. The formation of the GRC is a positive development and a good decision taken by the PML-N government. Although there are suspicions about the scope and working of the body, yet the step will work to guarantee fairness at some level. No institution can be allowed to work on its own and take decisions arbitrarily. It is the responsibility of an elected government to resolve the grievances of political parties. If the personnel of the security agencies violate the rule of law, they should also be questioned and brought to book. Everybody should be equal in the eyes of the law and this committee has to fulfil this gigantic task of ensuring the rule of law.
