Cheating in educations exams is a common phenomenon. Though this prevails almost in all the provinces of Pakistan yet Sindh and Balochistan are leading the race. Both the provinces are quite notorious in this regard and it is resulting in frequent downfall of the education. In January 2014, the Balochistan government declared “Education Emergency” after Chief Minister Baloch visited examination halls in the province’s capital of Quetta and found students cheating during exams. People outside the examination halls were sending in “help” to students taking exams despite a ban on the presence of unrelated people near examination centers under section 144 of CrPC. However some institutes have taken some positives steps in this direction. Delta School is the first institute in Balochistan to install CCTVs inside its examination halls in a bid to monitor student activity, clamp down on rampant cheating practices and increase security in the wake of a string of attacks on schools within and outside the province. In February this year, Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch led a rally in Quetta to highlight the growing trend of cheating in the province’s schools just weeks before matriculation examinations were scheduled to be held. The chief minister was joined by legislators, politicians, teachers and students, some of whom carried placards reading, “Cheating will be the death of knowledge.”
The problem cannot be solved by banning cheating and conducting rallies. There are some places in Balochistan where schools do not exist. It is better if Chief Minister is serious in bringing reforms in the educational system, he should take the initiative of changing the examination system. It should be semester-wise instead of annual. The government should also arrange qualified and trained teachers in schools. Without implementing these changes, it is impossible to prevent cheating.
