Pakistani cricketer-turned-opposition leader Imran Khan Saturday threatened the government to shut down the whole country with protests if a judicial commission to probe into vote was not formed immediately, Samaa reported.
“We are ever ready to take to streets if the government continues to drag its feet on the judicial commission. And it will become impossible for this government to run its affairs if we decided to shut down Pakistan,” Khan told reporters.
He was talking to media at his residence in Bani Gala upon his arrival in Pakistan after performing an Umrah in Saudi Arabia.
He said his party’s protest movement, which began in August in Islamabad but later spread nationwide, would resume from where it took a break, adding and this time wouldn’t stop until the constitution of judicial commission, which should be rated as credible by the foreign as well as local observers.
Khan said his party would never let this democracy fall prey to anyone’s political adventurism.
“May 11, 2013 election saw the worst rigging in the history of Pakistan. How can we let the ruling beneficiaries of this vote fraud get away with it?,” the PTI leader said.
On December 17, 2014, Khan had called off a four-month long protest movement to topple the government following the massacre of nearly 150 people by the Taliban at a school in the northwest.
His announcement came a day ahead of his party’s planned country-wide shutdown intended to force Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign and for his government to conduct an impartial inquiry into allegations of fraud in the 2013 election.
