The Peshawar incident left many scars on the Pakistan’s society. After the soft target, Government pondered over number of measures to secure the schools from further such brazen attacks. Number of security measures has been adopted in this regard. Extending and upping the boundary wall, appointment of security guards and devising a security plans. Many security experts and parents are questioning these flawed security measures that do not seem sufficient at all to prevent hardened terrorists from targeting schools. If anyone can climb a six-foot wall, then he can also jump over an eight-foot wall to enter the premises. Placing lower staff on security duty is also ridiculous. Even though it is virtually impossible to provide active security to every school given the limited availability of security personnel, surely institutions that are located in sensitive areas should be given more priority with the active role of intelligence agencies and police patrolling during school hours. However this is a long debate, the most important thing is among these measures, training of school students was also included. Though asking students to learn how to use guns is a step that was necessary following the horrific APS Peshawar incident but as a nation we must take a step back and look at what this means for society in general. Although the measures themselves were taken out of necessity, and the action of schools cannot be faulted, a long-term solution needs to be found since after all a student should not be spending his or her time learning how to use a firearm. It can effect student badly because by taking military training, we are inculcating them that they are not safe and state is unable to protect them and second thing though this training is for their security but who knows that these trained students may become a lethal weapons in the hand of terrorists. Government must not escape from its responsibilities and play its role in providing security to the core building blocks of nation.
