Social activist and intellectual Sabeen Mahmud, who was shot dead in Karachi’s Defence Society on Friday evening, had been receiving threats on her mobile phone for the past “four to six weeks” to suspend her activities, disclosed a senior police officer on Saturday. She was shot dead shortly after the end of a discussion programme, “Unsilencing Balochistan”, which was organised by her and attended by journalists and rights activists, including Abdul Qadeer Baloch, founder leader of the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons. These talks were arranged after the Lahore University of Management Sciences cancelled an event with Mr Qadeer earlier this month under pressure from the intelligence agencies. Mr Qadeer’s activism has been consistently opposed by the security establishment, to the point where few in the media or the activist community choose to interact with him now. Those who do engage with him often report threats.
Apart from Agencies she has earned the ire of number of right wing groups in the city, therefore it is before time to say who could be behind her assassination. This is not one example of silencing a sane voice earlier Rashid Rehman and then Perween Rahman had met the same fate. These people were the true patriots who wanted to change the mindset of the people by dialogues, ideas and discussions but they are silenced by those who want to change the world on the barrel of the gun and bullet but definitely pen is more powerful than a gun and surely they would be the winner.
