Pakistan is a conservative country where pseudo- religious scholars and organizations like CII are leading in misinterpreting the Islamic teachings. Whether it is issue of Hudood Ordinance, Use of DNA as evidence or transplantation of body organs, such Mullahs and CII always issued controversial verdicts. Where number of Ulemas supported the life-lengthening medical procedure but praised the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation for its efforts in this regard, CII head Maulana Sherani raised concerns about afterlife and interfaith issues that bordered on the absurd. At the same time Mufti Munibur Rehman saying that there was nothing wrong in transplanting organs, regardless of the faith of the donor and recipient. There is a general rule that ‘necessities permit the prohibited’ (al-darurat tubih al-mahzurat), has been used to support human organ donation with regards to saving or significantly enhancing a life of another providing that the benefit outweighs the personal cost that has to be borne. The following are some statements or verses which have been used to support organ donation:
“Whosoever saves the life of one person it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind.”

“Whosoever helps another will be granted help from Allah.”

Even ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia is carrying out transplantations, after these were cleared by the ulema there, while the procedure is also routine in Iran. Legislation on the matter went back and forth between the two houses of parliament for years, and the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act was finally signed into law in 2010. Next came the formidable task of altering societal confusions and prejudices. Organ transplant can save hundreds of lives as over 50,000 Pakistanis only die of kidney failure, 10,000 of liver failure and 6,500 of heart failure every year. Government must bring consensus on the issue without considering people like CII head.
