The outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus that has killed more than 7,300 people in west Africa so far is likely to last until the end of next year, a leading professor has said. Though Ebola has almost disappeared, but the suffering continues and little has been done to fix the health services that could not stop it. The spread of the virus, which has peaked in Liberia, is likely to cause a rapid increase in infections in Sierra Leone during the next few weeks while the vaccines take around three months to prove their effectiveness, the director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine added. Special attention to social and cultural factors is critical to prevent the rapid spread of an epidemic. In the case of Ebola, poorer communities with the most ineffective social and health services were the most affected. Culturally, long-standing traditions that relatives should clean dress and bury dead persons, even when they were affected by Ebola, led to the rapid spread of the infection. Ebola is an ongoing threat. So far, Ebola has affected nearly 24,000 people and killed almost 10,000, according to WHO statistics. Although the number of cases has levelled off, it is important to emphasise that Ebola is still a serious health threat. Ebola is not necessarily a fatal disease. Number of victims has also survived but it is responsibility of developed nations and WHO to control this diseases as soon as possible.
