In latest border attack 8 personnel of Iranian border guards have been lost their lives. The tension on this border has become a permanent case because of Sunni Militant groups and Pakistan’s failure to reign in them. In 2014, there have been a number of rounds of border skirmishes between Iran and Pakistan since the first week of October. However, reports that Pakistani forces have returned mortar fire is highly unusual and represents an increase in tensions that have marred this region for years. Iran is of the view that Pakistan’s side is incapable of controlling cross border activities. In wake of expected Pakistan’s expected support to Saudia in Yemen, the incident of killing of eight Iranian security personnel could worsen the ties between both the countries. According to Ali Asghar Mirshekari, deputy governor of Sistan-Balochistan province, the attacks originated from Pakistan’s side of the border. Tensions along the Iran-Pakistan border have been constant feature, mostly prompted by drug traffickers and Sunni extremist groups, and both countries have resolved to end this through better border management. The attack exposes the shortcomings of that resolve, but its most important ramifications are for Pakistan-Iran diplomatic relationship. Balochistan has been the arena for proxy wars between the Sunni and Shia powers for quite some time, and this attacks hints at what could be in store if Pakistan picks a polarizing position in the Yemen crisis. Therefore Pakistan needs to control the terrorist activities on border that could ignite a wide fire of sectarian tension in the area. Pakistan will need to work with Tehran and improve security in sensitive border regions to ensure its soil is not used by terrorist groups to cause trouble across the border.
