The attack at a university in Garissa on Thursday killed 147 people, mostly students. The Al-Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility. It was a horrible attack like Taliban stormed Pakistani school in Peshawar and massacred 153 innocent children. Soon after the attack, Kenyan government launched operation against the militant Al-Shabab group. Government also claimed to recognized militants that stormed the university.
The Garissa University College attack was the worst ever terror attack on Kenyan soil since the 1998 one on the US embassy. In 2013, a shopping mall in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi was attacked by al Shabaab militants. Such instances have made it a necessity for Kenya to take action. Since 2011, Kenya has been launching intermittent airstrikes against al Shabaab camps in Somalia because it shares the same fears and insecurities as other African countries that share a porous border with the lawless frontier that is present day Somalia. Somalia is a smaller country as compared to Pakistan both in weapons and military, also its military is not that skilled as Pakistan’s but still it has resolve to eradicate Al-Shabab militants from land. Although under the leadership of Pakistan’s new chief of army staff, Pakistan military has gained new strategic successes against militants yet Pakistan needs to learn from the Kenya.
