Lady Health workers have a vital role in national health program. Travelling from home to home and discussing the health matter with house women and giving them the useful suggestions is their prime duty. They have become the an important part of health policy of the country. However they way government is treating them is totally unfair and biased. First was the tenacity of the Government to regularize them despite lot of agitation and protests, they failed to achieve regularization and it was the SC who issued verdict in their favor and they were regularized by the Government. Following devolution in 2010, the centre had pledged to continue financing the LHW programme until 2017, after which the provinces would assume the responsibility, a decision reiterated by the Council of Common Interests. However, a recent meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council decided to suspend funding from June 2015, leaving the provinces with the daunting task of finding space within their own budgets for the outlay.
Even though the programme could be much improved, the 106,000 LHWs in Pakistan play an important role in providing essential primary health services on a community level, especially in rural areas.More than 85 pc of LHWs are busy in anti-polio campaign which is a hectic task under the circumstances but despite number of them have been shot dead, yet they have not refused to withdraw from their duties. Now it is duty of the Government to come up with their demands because they are doing their duties with Zeal. If government does not come up with their demands it would simply mean that it is not serious about the health of citizens.
