The return of the PTI in Parliament after a marathon period of protests, sit-ins and public rallies against Government, shows that PTI has achieved certain level of maturity. Its return to the legislature ends a long crisis and ensures that a party that constitutes a major political force will be able to take part in the decision-making and legislative process. Imran Khan himself referred to the need for this in reference to the crisis in Yemen as the party announced its decision to return after a core committee meeting at his residence in Bani Gala, Islamabad. A democratic regime requires strong voices of opposition in parliament to be fair and viable and it is due time for the PTI to return to parliament and raise their concerns there instead of on the streets and outside Constitution Avenue. Upon realising that he could not pressurise the Prime Minister into resigning through inflammatory and unsubstantiated accusations and an economically and politically taxing “tsunami”, Imran Khan has realised that he must return to parliament and can only bring about change by ensuring that PTI parliamentarians attend, vote and speak out in parliament. The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) deserves credit for setting up a judicial commission to investigate PTI’s allegations of rigging and not reacting to Imran Khan’s political attacks vindictively. The Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has also facilitated the resolution of this conflict and opposition leader Khursheed Shah has asserted that PPP is committed to preventing the acceptance of PTI resignations. Allegations of large-scale unfair play during that poll had of course led the PTI to take to the streets. With this matter now resolved, we hope that from now on, the PTI will be able to use parliament as the forum where disagreement is expressed and solutions reached. This is something our country needs. The input from the PTI on key issues of national concern will be very closely watched over the coming months. The presence of PTI in the parliament would help the government to reach on the vital decisions regarding issues of national interests.
