Ideological disagreements between Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party’s Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his father Asif Zardari and their conflicting approaches to run the party affairs have not only lowered the spirits of dedicated workers but have almost divided the party into “Bhutto comrades” and “Zardari loyalists”. A significant sign of these differences was Bilawal Bhutto’s absence from the seventh death anniversary of his mother Benazir Bhutto and then his grandfathers death anniversary. Thus Instead, the commemorative rally on Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s death anniversary was held in Naudero. Former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari arrived to a tumultuous welcome by the workers at the venue, accompanied by his daughter Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari. Conspicuous by his absence was Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairperson of the party, whose prolonged staying away in London has set off a storm of speculation regarding differences with his father, all of which has of course been studiously denied by the PPP.

The enduring image of the PPP-led previous government’s tenure is the sight of the jialas (committed PPP workers) desperately trying at various venues to gain access to then president Zardari and being rebuffed and even set upon by the police to prevent them disturbing the repose of the president. This has displeased the Jialas from the leadership and this is one of the main reasons of Bilawal’s displeasure with the father. It is hoped that may be in future Bilawal could take the party leadership in hand; Bhutto’s PPP once again may become the voice of lower tier of the society.
