Azizabad by-polls are scheduled on April 23 but before this both the parties are at loggerheads. There have been several rounds of clashes on both sides and verbal brawl is also going on both sides. Number of arrests has been made on both the sides but of no use. This is something the two parties need to think about carefully. The rising rhetoric between them has brought about the current situation and it appears things are getting no better. They are not helped by the fact that the language being used remains vitriolic and full of venom. Imran Khan has threatened to bring legal action against Altaf Hussain in London. The entire country is watching the drama of democratic leaders. The leaders of both the parties should rise above the conflict making thinking and show maturity in order to avoid further clash that may spread to other parts of the city. Not only Pakistan but the neighboring countries are also curious about the results of Azizabad election.
There is then much to fight for – for both parties. But they must not permit this fight to become a physical war between members of violent mobs. Instead, the battle should be fought on the strength of policies and performance, essentially good governance. Other political parties should also play their role in calming down both the side while it is duty of the Election commission to advise both sides to show maturity. The role of ECP is nowhere in entire episode. All the political parties and ECP should interfere the matter and play their role for the peaceful holding of by-elections.
