The case of dismissal of SSP Muhammad Ali Nekokara has become a leading story for Pakistan’s media. SSP Nekokara, a CSP officer was rightly known as the man of principles and an upright officer. During his service as SSP ICT, Nekokara earned fame as an honest and intrepid police officer who never compromised on principles and worked hard for the betterment of the department. The question is that if NekoKara was such an honest man why he is sacked? The story is same but with different name, Nekokar dared to defy the orders of Political superiors who wanted to protect the political fiefdom of PML-N. For politicians a civil servant is like a personal servant and they cannot tolerate that a civil servant dare to defy their orders. The story goes back to PTI and PAT sit-ins. One day PTI and PAT supporters started to inch towards the Parliament and Prime Minister House, SSP Nekokara was ordered, by his (partisan) political superiors, to “use force” against unarmed protestors, ostensibly in order to protect the political fiefdom of the PML(N) government. In fidelity to the cardinal principle that PSP officers are “servants” of the State (and the people), as opposed to any one political party, SSP Nekokara exercised his independent judgment to recommend that ‘use of force’ may result in unnecessary damage and loss of life. SSP Nekokara did not want to turn the Islamabad a battle ground in which innocent people could lose their lives. This was the crime Nekokara committed. Had Muhammad Ali Nekokara learnt something from Patwaris and SHOs of Punjab, he would not have been sacked. And one more thing is clear that this is not the country for people like Nekokaras.
