Pakistani lawmakers are partaking in a joint session of Parliament to discuss Pakistan’s role in the escalating conflict in Yemen, a gathering that also marks the return of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to the House after a seven-month boycott, reported Dawn. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif last week called for a joint session of Parliament as opposition leaders pushed for an All Parties Conference to debate whether Pakistan will accede to Saudi Arabia’s request for ground and air military assistance to counter the Houthi insurgency in Yemen. Opposition parties have agreed Pakistan should not become a part of the ongoing Saudi-led offensive against Houthi rebels in Yemen, Express News reported. The opposition parties considered Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s statement that Saudi Arabia has demanded warships, warplanes and soldiers from Pakistan and concluded Pakistan should protect Saudi sovereignty but not join the war. Meanwhile in another news reported by Tribune that after senior Saudi officials in Riyadh requested a high-powered Pakistani delegation both ‘material and manpower’ to tackle Houthi rebels attempting to gain control of Yemen, the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is mulling over what to ask Saudi Arabia in return.
It shows that where Pakistan opposition is clearly advising government to refuse the support to Saudia, at the same time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is ready to sale out Pakistan for few Riyals. Nawaz Sharif should not forget that Pakistan would have to cost high if it jumps into fray. Pakistan has already paid a huge cost of Afghan war and if once again Pakistan goes for short term benefits it would have to pay the heavy price for it.
