Due to poor security and law and order situation, trade activities have been at lowest level. Western countries always avoided investing in Pakistan thus for Pakistan it is better focus on low caliber countries with at least moderate trade activities. In such a positive development Pakistan Government was looking towards ASEAN and Central Asian Republics (CARs) in a bid to open up new avenues for trade enhancement. Intensified trade and economic ties with the Central Asian states is an unrealized dream, as successive Governments had been claiming to working for the cherished goal but there is little on the ground to suggest that we are moving seriously towards that end. This is despite the fact that there are a number of complementing factors that could help us promote closer economic cooperation with these countries.
The common culture and history could help boost up trade activities between Central Asian countries and Pakistan. In order to boost up trade with these countries Pakistan has already a plan to link Central Asian states to Pakistan through Pukhtun belt that would connect KPK to Afghanistan and through that to central Asian states. China, India and Iran are increasingly focusing their attention towards the central Asian markets to enhance their trade share. Now it is time for Pakistan to also develop trade activities with these states to strengthen its economy.
