In shocking news a son of a former minister allegedly killed a teenager. Mustafa Kanju, the son of former minister for foreign affairs Siddique Kanju, and brother of PML-N MNA Abdul Rehman Kanju, had got infuriated after his luxury car accidentally hit the vehicle of a woman in Cavalry Ground. He opened indiscriminate fire and bullets hit Zain, 16, a motorcyclist, and Husnain, 18, who had come out of the house after hearing the noise. Zain, a class-IX student, died on the spot and Husnain was critically injured.
It is indeed gruesome act, but it did not happen for the first time in Pakistan that a spoiled son of an influential killed boy and unfortunately the courts failed to dispense Justice in such cases. Case of Shahrukh Khan is a lucid example, Similarly son of Ex-Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani gunned down a boy who allegedly hit the vehicle of his convoy but nothing happened. Furthermore there is the combination of the influential and powerful frightening the victim’s family into accepting blood money and forgetting the whole affair. But the biggest problem is the law enforcement machinery’s inability to ensure security in the first place, and ensure such incidents just don’t take place. Sadly, the police force remains a part of the problem rather than the solution. Interestingly, in typical fashion, the chief minister ordered some compensation money for the boy’s family, not to mention an inquiry, amid promises of justice, etc. And one must not expect something different from Chief Minister Punjab as his progress in such cases is evidence.
However the case must be pursued to its logical end and the killers punished for the crime because nobody is above the law. Our law enforcement agencies and the courts should decide as per the law in all such cases. It should not become another example where the influential can buy off justice. Besides punishing the culprit, it is also the responsibility of the state to provide security to the victim’s family and siblings who are being threatened by the perpetrators. When will we get rid of the atrocities of influential goons? There must be an end to this VIP culture in Pakistan.
