National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has responded to Opposition Leader Omar Ayub’s letter concerning the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

In his reply, revealed on Sunday, the Speaker stated that forming a parliamentary committee is the next procedural step. However, he emphasized that prior consultations between the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader are a constitutional prerequisite.

The Speaker clarified that the parliamentary committee can only be established once both sides have proposed names following the consultation process.

This response came in reply to Omar Ayub’s demand for the formation of a parliamentary committee for the appointment of the new Chief Election Commissioner and two members.

It is pertinent to note that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote to Omar Ayub on May 16, inviting him for consultations on the appointment of the electoral watchdog’s chief; however, no final names have been proposed so far.
