PHC Halts ECP Proceedings Against Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has suspended the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) disqualification proceedings against PTI leaders Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz.

In a written order issued Wednesday, the PHC directed the ECP to halt any action stemming from its August 5 disqualification notification. Notices were also issued to the ECP and other parties involved, with the next hearing scheduled for August 20.

The court observed that both leaders were convicted in absentia by an anti-terrorism court but have since appeared and obtained protective bail. They are now pursuing appeals in the Lahore High Court, and the PHC noted that the convictions are not yet final.

The court criticised the ECP for disqualifying Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz without giving them a proper hearing, stating that the move contradicted principles of due process.

By suspending the ECP’s decision and summoning responses from all parties involved, the court has effectively paused the disqualification proceedings pending further legal scrutiny.
