The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Saturday that the country’s imports rose by $1 billion in July.
According to the data, overall imports increased by 23% last month, reaching a total value of Rs5.86 billion. Petroleum imports registered a 6.42% rise, amounting to $1.34 billion.
A sharp surge was also recorded in mobile phone imports, which jumped by 125% in just one month, with devices worth Rs41.38 billion brought into the country. Imports in the textile sector grew by 21%, while the transport sector saw an even steeper increase of 168%.
Moreover, the imports for vehicles increased by 139%, crossing the volume to over $30 million. The imports for food items crossed over $740 million.
Meanwhile, the imports for milk, cream, wheat, dry fruits, tea and condiments have surged.
It is pertinent to note that in July, palm oil worth over Rs300 million imported in the country. With an increase in imports, the trade deficit increased by 29.40% to take the total volume to $3.18 billion.
