At the UN’s Doorstep: PTI’s Desperation or a Turning Point for Justice? Jawad Naqvi

The incarceration of Pakistan’s former First Family has now escalated into an international issue, as the embattled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has sought intervention from the United Nations. Formal petitions on behalf of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been submitted to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. The petitions allege that the couple is being subjected to gross injustice by being kept behind bars under conditions that amount to arbitrary detention and inhumane treatment. The complaints further argue that this continued incarceration is politically motivated, designed to weaken Khan’s political resolve and undermine his influence.

These appeals were made with the assistance of Perseus Strategies, a prominent human rights law firm. While it remains uncertain what practical impact these petitions may have on Pakistan’s domestic legal framework, the move has undeniably drawn international attention to the country’s ongoing political turmoil and the highly contested legal proceedings against the former prime minister. By internationalizing the issue, PTI has signaled its lack of faith in domestic remedies and its belief that Khan’s prosecution is tainted by political bias.

The petitions were filed by Khan’s sons and Bushra Bibi’s sister, and they come at a pivotal moment in PTI’s political trajectory. Imran Khan’s struggle appears to be at a crossroads. Although the Supreme Court recently granted him bail in the high-profile May 9 vandalism cases, and he has been acquitted in several other charges, the PTI leadership believes that the judicial process remains tilted against them. Legal channels, according to the party, are either blocked or manipulated, undermining the principles of fair play and justice. This frustration has led Khan’s sons to step forward in their personal capacity, launching international awareness campaigns and meeting key political and human rights figures in the United States and the United Kingdom—marking two years since their father’s imprisonment.

The latest appeal to the UN seems to stem from growing anxiety within Khan’s family and party. Reports of his deteriorating health and the prolonged delays in the hearing of his appeals have likely contributed to the sense of urgency behind this international legal outreach. For many within PTI, this is not just a legal battle but a broader struggle for political survival and public vindication.

The critical question now is: what comes next? Imran Khan’s prolonged detention, the slow pace of legal proceedings, and the appearance of judicial bias have become matters of national and international concern. Even some of his political adversaries acknowledge the irregularities and inefficiencies in his prosecution. The path forward must be rooted in the rule of law. It is imperative that the legal system operates free of political interference, ensuring justice is served fairly and transparently. Only then can the credibility of the judiciary be restored—and the imprisoned former prime minister and his wife be granted the lawful relief their supporters insist they deserve.
