Improvised Explosive device (IED) is a common device that has caused multiple casualties of military personnel’s. IED can be indigenously prepared by simple means and it can be activated by different methods. Most of the IEDs are homemade, cobbled together using scrap metal, ball bearings, kitchen utensils and rudimentary electronics.
Today, it has become a most prime weapon in the hands of terrorist specially in Guerilla wars and ambushes. The IED has become more dangerous than a bullet or a rocket. 63 % of US casualties in the Iraq war were caused by IEDs; the figure stands at 66% for the Afghan war, and similar numbers can be found in Pakistan’s military operations near the Durrand line. As the militant’s infrastructure is broken down and their ability to wage conventional warfare weakened, more and more of them will turn towards IEDs as the go-to instrument of waging war.
IED is difficult to stop because of its wide variety of ways and methods of use. A year ago Pakistan government signed an agreement to US for providing such equipments that could safeguard military personnel from IEDs however such equipments has not been provided to Pakistan yet. Pakistan needs to use spy drones to foil such attempts that cause huge human loss by IEDs. The government needs to secure places where IEDs could be potentially placed; such as blocking drain pipes which flow under roads and clearing dense foliage near busy routes. Military forces will have to boost their capacity to judge such traps that cause major human loss. IEDs is most effective and only tool of terrorists that is causing damage, it is need of the hour both for military and government to find out a permanent solution of this dangerous weapon.
