The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar has warned that the world is neglecting an “invisible crisis” unfolding in the country.
Speaking at a press conference after presenting his report to the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, Tom Andrews said the situation in Myanmar has deteriorated “exponentially” since the military coup of February 2021.
“The humanitarian situation in Myanmar is far more dire this year than when I last reported to the United Nations,” he said, highlighting that around 22 million people now need humanitarian assistance, while 16.7 million are suffering from severe food insecurity.
