Pakistan Scraps 21 LNG Shipments as Demand Falls

Pakistan has opted to cancel 21 liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments previously arranged with an Italian energy company, citing reduced domestic demand, sources in the Petroleum Division revealed.

The agreement between Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) and the Italian firm initially included one cargo per month, but Pakistan has now significantly scaled back its LNG procurement for 2026 and 2027.

Under the revised plan, only two LNG vessels will arrive in 2026—one in January and one in December—while 2027 will see just a single shipment in January, compared to the originally scheduled twelve per year.

The sources added that the decision came after Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) reassessed domestic demand and found that gas requirements could be met without the additional imports.

Officials said the move aims to cut unnecessary costs and align energy imports with actual consumption, as Pakistan continues to face foreign exchange pressure and seeks to balance its energy portfolio.
