Iraq has launched a new nationwide campaign to restore and excavate heritage and archaeological sites, marking one of the country’s most significant cultural preservation efforts in recent years.

The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities announced that work has already begun at several key locations. Deputy Minister Fadel Al-Badarani said the initiative reflects the government’s growing commitment to heritage tourism, which has now become a strategic priority.

He noted that Iraq is advancing the rehabilitation of historic and archaeological areas in line with previously approved development plans.

Al-Badarani added that Baghdad’s designation as the Arab Tourism Capital has further encouraged ongoing beautification and cultural revitalisation projects across the city. He stressed that Iraq’s national vision places culture and tourism at the heart of state policy, elevating the sector from a supporting role to a central government objective.
