The Trump administration has halted all asylum decisions and temporarily suspended visa issuance for travelers holding Afghan passports, citing the recent National Guard shooting in the nation’s capital as a reason to tighten legal immigration.
The suspect in Wednesday’s shooting near the White House, which left Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, dead and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, critically injured — both members of the West Virginia National Guard — is facing charges including first-degree murder. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack.
The Republican administration has indicated plans to pause entry from certain low-income countries and conduct a review of Afghans and other legal migrants currently residing in the United States.
