Ongoing Water Shortages Hit Kabul

Residents of Kabul are grappling with a worsening water crisis amid the cold winter months.

Many locals report being forced to purchase clean drinking water due to the lack of a reliable supply.

Baghi Shah, from District 9, said, “There’s a shortage of water in Qala-e-Zaman Khan. Electricity is also intermittent; sometimes we have none at all.”

Gul Mohammad Khan, another resident, added, “We have to buy mineral water. People are poor and can only afford one or two small containers.”

Officials at Kabul’s Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Company say several water projects are underway to help resolve the issue.

Hamidullah Yalani, a water affairs expert, noted: “Unless surface water sources like the Panjshir River or Lalander Dam are connected to Kabul’s water network, underground water alone cannot meet the city’s growing demand.”
