A Troubling Silence: Why the State Must Clarify Imran Khan’s Condition/ Saleem Shehzad

Growing concern surrounds the security and well-being of incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan, as the government continues to maintain a puzzling silence on his condition. The absence of credible information has forced the public and the opposition to treat official claims with suspicion. What makes the situation even more troubling is the persistent denial of access to Khan’s family members, legal team, and political colleagues, raising fears that the authorities may be concealing the true state of the detained leader’s health.

Khan’s sons, Suleman and Kasim, have once again expressed deep anxiety about their father’s right to life, safety, and medical care. They have appealed to international human rights bodies, arguing that the treatment of their father constitutes a grave violation of the rights owed to any prisoner. Their concerns have grown sharper as the government appears paralysed by an inexplicable fear of the political implications surrounding Khan and his party. Kasim has suggested that officials may be hiding “something irreversible” regarding his father’s condition—an allegation that gains weight as Khan’s personal physician continues to be barred from visiting him and as an almost total media blackout shrouds his situation. While the intent behind this strategy may be to politically isolate and pressure the PTI chief, it has instead exposed the government to domestic and global criticism.

Meanwhile, the broader political climate is deteriorating. Rapid constitutional amendments pushed through without consensus, the erosion of judicial autonomy, and the use of extra-legal measures against political opponents have all contributed to an environment increasingly at odds with democratic norms. Adding to the unease is the federal government’s apparent inclination to impose Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, effectively removing the PTI-led provincial administration. Such a move would fuel further unrest and push prospects of political reconciliation even farther out of reach.

Under the law, the government is duty-bound to ensure that all prisoners—particularly a former elected prime minister—are allowed access to family, legal counsel, and necessary medical care. The ruling coalition would be better served by addressing its political differences with PTI through dialogue rather than through heavy-handed administrative tactics. Allowing immediate, verified access to Imran Khan for his family, lawyers, and independent journalists is essential to dispel rumours, restore public confidence, and uphold the minimum standards of justice and transparency.
