Muslim American Heritage Month: NY honours Muslim contributions

In recognition of the rich history and contributions of its Muslim residents, New York State has officially designated January as Muslim American Heritage Month.

A local religious leader described the move as a meaningful acknowledgment of the Muslim community’s role in the state.

Khalid Qazi, president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council of Western New York, said the proclamation offers positive visibility and fosters unity. He noted that such initiatives help bring communities closer together and instill pride through formal recognition of Muslim heritage. Qazi added that, as Governor Kathy Hochul has highlighted, New York continues to stand as a symbol of hope and tolerance while celebrating the diversity of its Muslim population.

As part of the designation, Hochul’s directive ordered 16 historic landmarks around New York, including Niagara Falls, to be illuminated green on January 2.

“It was a very significant and a very visible way of recognizing, on behalf of the governor and the state, the Heritage Month. We are grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul for this proclamation and recognition,” he said.
