Muslim World has been rocked by terrorist attacks in previous week. The last one week has seen attacks in different countries of the of the Islamic world, all of which have been claimed by the so called Islamic State, and all of which have made headlines across the globe. Unfortunately all these incidents were more than brutal. Specially the killing spree in Baghdad left the Muslim world in pain and agony. The Istanbul Attack, Dhaka Attack, Baghdad bombings, Saudia suicide attack and Chitral flooding has rocked the Islamic world before the arrival of Eid. Of course, this does not mean there will be no cheer at Eid.

Families need such occasions to come together and to enjoy the festivity that in so many ways is becoming more and more subdued as a result of inflationary pressures, the threat to personal safety and political instability. Eid is a time when all these woes can be put aside for at least a few days. But the ostentatious displays that have become a part of the festival add to the difficulties in doing this for more and more people across the country. At this point, we must remember that for some there will be no real celebration at all. There will be no food on family tables, no new clothes for children and no gifts to hand out. The growing social inequity should be a cause of deeper concern than is currently the case. This year, as some suggest, Eid should not be marked with outward display. Instead, the focus should be finding ways to honour those who have died and those who lie in pain in hospitals. We must consider why Muslims should inflict this horror on other Muslims; and why the message of peace inherent in the religion has been lost. If the circle of togetherness is to be extended, we need to consider all the factors that are tearing our world apart, striking even at the most holy places of Islam and creating ever greater divide among believers. This is not the spirit of Ramazan or Eid. This is not how the occasion should be marked. The fact that we are having to do so is something to ponder over in the hours after the Eid crescent is sighted.
