Rao Abdul Kareem takes charge as IG Punjab, Usman Anwar becomes DG FIA

The federal government has officially notified the appointment of Rao Abdul Kareem as Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police, while Dr Usman Anwar has been named Director General (DG) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Rao Abdul Kareem, an officer from the 24th Common, was previously serving as Additional IG of the Special Branch before being assigned the new role.

Dr Usman Anwar has been appointed as DG FIA following his tenure as IG Punjab, a position he had held since January 24, 2023, serving for over three years.

The appointments were finalised after several senior officers were considered for the positions, including Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana and Additional IGP Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Wasim Sial.

As per the notification, Raja Riffat Mukhtar has also been posted to the Narcotics Control Division.

Who is Rao Abdul Kareem?

Additional Inspector General Rao Abdul Kareem belongs to the 24th Common of the Police Service of Pakistan.

He joined the police service in 1996 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

During his career, Rao Abdul Kareem has served as District Police Officer (DPO) in Jhang, Mianwali and Kasur, and has also performed duties as Regional Police Officer (RPO) Gujranwala.

He has held several key positions, including Additional IG of the Punjab Highway Patrol.

Prior to his appointment as IG Punjab, he was serving as Additional IGP Special Branch.
