Shafaqna Pakistan: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has published a comprehensive report on the solar energy sector, pointing to a steep increase in electricity tariffs and a rising transition toward renewable energy sources.
The study reveals that electricity prices have surged by 155 percent over the past three years, driven largely by capacity payments and the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee.
It also highlights that millions of people across the country still lack access to electricity, while in many regions, utility bills now exceed household rent. This growing financial strain is pushing consumers to adopt solar power systems as an alternative.
Additionally, the report notes that Pakistan has the potential to generate up to 29,000 megawatts of solar energy—far exceeding its current power requirements.
The CCP also highlighted a substantial increase in solar panel imports from China and a rapid expansion in solar usage across the country. Over the past five years, Pakistan has emerged as one of the leading markets for solar panels, although a large portion of solar installations remains undocumented.
