PPP dismisses reports of Pervez Elahi joining party

Shafaqna Pakistan: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has dismissed reports suggesting that PTI President Parvez Elahi is set to join the party and may be appointed as Punjab governor.

The speculation, which appears to have originated on social media, circulated within political circles and triggered discussion about a possible change in the provincial governorship.

When asked to comment, senior PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said he would welcome Elahi if he chose to join the party—remarks that some interpreted as indirect support for the rumours.

However, party sources firmly rejected the claims, describing them as baseless. PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Hasan Murtaza questioned why the party would risk its current political position in Punjab, stating there was no justification for bringing Elahi into its fold.

He also reaffirmed that the party respects Elahi’s affiliation with PTI and expressed hope that he remains aligned with his political convictions. Murtaza added that the PPP is satisfied with the current governor’s performance and stressed that the rumours hold no truth.

When asked about his earlier comments, which were being cited as evidence of the rumors, Kaira said they were merely light-hearted banter. He clarified that he had no recent meetings with party leadership and therefore had no firsthand knowledge of any such decision. He added that social media rumours do not merit a response and that no reasonable person would spread such claims without verifying the facts.

Another source pointed out that PPP has not forgotten Elahi’s alleged betrayal during the PTI government’s tenure. He said President Asif Ali Zardari would not trust him again, given his historic double-cross. Considering Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s close ties with President Zardari, the source said, Elahi would not be allowed to join PPP due to mutual grudges.
