UNHCR: Rohingya sea deaths reach record high in 2025

Shafaqna Pakistan: Nearly 900 Rohingya refugees were reported missing or confirmed dead in 2025 while attempting dangerous sea crossings through the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, making it the deadliest year on record for the route, according to the UNHCR.

The UN refugee agency said on Friday that more than one in seven of an estimated 6,500 Rohingya refugees who attempted the journey last year were reported either missing or dead. This represents the highest mortality rate globally for refugee and migrant sea crossings.

UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch told reporters in Geneva that the figures highlight the extreme risks faced by Rohingya refugees undertaking perilous sea journeys in search of safety and better living conditions.
