HEC bans new varsities, sub-campuses at tehsil level

Shafaqna Pakistan: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has introduced a strict policy governing the establishment of new universities and sub-campuses at the tehsil level, stating that no new institution can be set up without prior approval.

In an official letter issued to vice-chancellors and heads of all universities, the HEC clarified that the creation of any new sub-campus or university will only be allowed after formal permission and institutional scrutiny.

It further warned that no No Objection Certificate (NOC), accreditation, or degree verification will be granted to institutions established in violation of the policy.

The commission also raised concerns over the academic standards of tehsil-level campuses, highlighting issues such as a shortage of PhD-qualified faculty, low student enrolment, and a limited range of academic programs.

The HEC has immediately suspended all pending sub-campuses and their applications, while a complete ban has been imposed on admissions and advertising in these institutions.

It has been further stated that in case of violation of the policy, the approval of the campuses and programs can also be cancelled, and all universities have been directed to strictly implement the new policy.
