Shafaqna Pakistan: Nearly 900 Rohingya refugees are reported to have died or gone missing in the waters between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea in 2025, making it the deadliest year on record for the community.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the past year has witnessed a sharp rise in dangerous sea journeys as Rohingya refugees flee renewed fighting in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, continued persecution, and worsening conditions in refugee camps in Bangladesh.
The UN refugee agency further reported that in 2026, around 2,800 people have already attempted similar voyages, departing from either Bangladesh or Myanmar’s Rakhine State in efforts to reach Malaysia or Indonesia, despite the significant risks involved.
