Shafaqna Pakistan: Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, began a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Wednesday, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Araghchi’s one-day visit comes a week ahead of US President Donald Trump’s scheduled trip to Beijing for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14–15.
Earlier in the week, the United States and Iran exchanged new attacks in the Gulf as tensions escalated over control of the Strait of Hormuz, involving competing maritime blockades that further strained an already fragile truce.
Trump later said the US Navy would assist in ensuring safe passage for ships through the strait, though the operation was paused after he claimed there had been “great progress” toward a broader agreement with Iran. Tehran has not yet issued an immediate response.
The Iranian foreign minister said the Monday attacks, taking place after he said Tehran was looking into Trump’s request for negotiations, showed there was no military solution to the crisis.
Beijing, while maintaining a broadly neutral position on the conflict, has opposed the attacks on Iran’s sovereignty and also facilitated mediation efforts.
China has repeatedly urged the US and Iran to maintain the ceasefire and lift the restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.
